Dr Ross Syme BSc(Hons, BVM&S, MRCVS
Ross graduated from Edinburgh Vet school after completing a degree in Biochemistry from Glasgow University. He has worked in general practice in Kilbarchan, Kippen and Crossford. He joined Avondale in 2004 becoming a partner in 2005. Ross is a member of the British Equine Veterinary Association ( BEVA) and the association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (ARCVS).
Ross was a finalist in the Animal Health Trust Equestrian Awards (Equine Vet of the year in 2011. He is a Veterinary Examiner for the Worshipful Company of Farriers examining farriers for their Diploma, Associate and Fellowship exams. He is an Official Veterinary surgeon (OVS) and qualified to export equines. He has been a racecourse veterinary surgeon at Hamilton Park Racecourse since 2005. His clinical interests include advance dentistry, standing surgery, lameness and remedial shoeing. In his spare time Ross is an avid formula 1 fan.
Dr Karen Innes BVMS, MRCVS
Karen joined the team at Avondale vets after graduating from the University of Glasgow. While studying at university Karen continued with her part-time job at a busy riding school assisting with lessons and caring for the horses. She also gained invaluable experience working in a small animal practice as a nursing assistant whilst studying. Karen enjoys all aspects of equine work in particular lameness investigation and treatment of sarcoids and colic. She also has a keen interest in small animal internal medicine particularly endocrinology. Karen is looking forward to the challenge of splitting her time between equine and small animal work. Outside of work Karen can be found riding her own horse Myah and walking her Labrador Sam.
Lorna McGowan – Equine Receptionist
Lorna joined Avondale in Jan 16 having moved back to Scotland after 20+ years working in England in a variety of equine roles including managing racing and eventing yards.
As well as answering the equine phone, making appointments and running the equine office Lorna also enjoys assisting the vets with in patients and diagnostic devices especially lameness investigations.
Outside of work Lorna enjoys(!) running and long walks with her 2 dogs Angus and Hector. Lorna is a familiar face to many across Lanarkshire as she teaches and judges many of you at Dressage!
Mercedes Perez DVM, MRCVS
Mercedes joined the Avondale equine team in August 2017. She graduated from CEU Valencia University and continued her education with postgraduate studies in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Barcelona University. Soon after Mercedes became an intern in the equine teaching hospital of Barcelona University where she developed a high interest in new surgical techniques. Her clinical interests include surgery, anaesthesia, analgesia and imaging. In her spare time Mercedes enjoys riding horses and playing paddle tennis.

Farm and Equine
Our normal office hours for the farm and equine departments are 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. The main surgery is open 8am to 7pm Mon-Fri and 8.30am to 12 noon Saturday to collect drugs or make an appointment please telephone 01357 520251.
